I am an older woman and found it extremely easy to assemble on my own. The only help I needed was putting the top on, it is very heavy. Lifting the tile top into place is definitely a two person job! I found some baskets that fit beautifully on the center desplay shelves. I absolutely love my new kitchen island!!!

Looks beautiful in our kitchen and adds lots of needed countertop and storage space. Mostly solid hardwood construction, but the drawer is made of flimsy wood and cannot hold much weight at all. Also the finish could have used a second coat of varnish, and we will need to add this ourselves. Comes mostly assembled, but attaching countertop to the island base was difficult. Gluing in the guides and screwing them into to the table top from the drawer space was a painful task. there were no pre-drilled holes for this!Also, two different screw lengths were provided yet the poor instructions made no differentiation for these. We only realized there were different screw lengths after it was too late. Heads-up...use the short ones to attach the knobs and the long ones to attach the guides to th etable top. Table top is very heavy and requires two persons to lift and center on the base. Now that it is finally assembled my wife loves it, and I would say it is a very good value for the price.

I have a rather small kitchen and this island works wonderfully in there. I was amazed by its storage capacity which helped to declutter and organize my kitchen. The added workspace is a definate plus as well. And best of all, it looks beautiful in my kitchen.
Delivery ran a bit late, but everyone we dealt with was very friendly and helpful. The merchandise arrived in perfect condition. I have no complaints whatsoever regarding delivery service.

It went together much easier than some other people have indicated. It absolutely takes two people, but other than that it's fine. Large amount of storage space and wonderful work space.

I previously reviewed this Kitchen Island and gave it a poor review because I could not find all of the directions for assembly and hardware and assembly parts.
After finding them and putting it together I have a much better opinion on the product.
It looks and works well. It was somewhat diffcult to assemble the wooden sliders that attached the top to the base--had to be somewhat of a contortionist to do it, but it was accomplished.
Overall, after completely assembly I would recommnend it. We look forward to enjoying it over the Holidays.

It looks nice, top is strong-we accidentally dropped an empty cast-iron pot rack on it and it didn't damage it. Nice and heavy, moves only with sliders under the feet.

A large great piece of furniture with a BIG neutral tile top that is easily moved to other positions and lots of storage space underneath. Looks like the picture. Get help to mount top to base because it is heavy and there are no starter holes for the screws that go in at an awkward position, but worth the effort.

There were several construction issues. The main one being a screw that was put in wrong resulting in a split in the wood at the base of island. It is still pretty to look at and serves its purpose.

This is for the most part a very well constructed piece of furniture. Most all parts are durable and as a whole it should last for a long time. I would definitely recommend this product and Mercantila. As a person reading reviews you want to know what I found wrong, so I'll concentrate on that. But nothing here stopped me from being completely satisfied.As mentioned in other reviews, the hardware is not up to par. The screws for the knobs were just fine, but they had only pinholes started for me to screw into. And the wood used for the knobs is very hard/dense. I ended up drilling out larger holes.The barrel bolts don't stay in position. They are used to hold the table top in one of the three positions. You have to push the bolt up into the table top and turn it to lock. But they don't stay locked in the up position. I'll probably do what others did and get spring-loaded bolts.The drawer slide is way below par. The drawer has a few hitches and doesn't always want to slide. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet to fix that. The way we are using this, the drawer won't get much use, as we have the top slid out towards the front, thus we can't access the drawer since the top covers the drawer.[...]
The delivery was VERY prompt. Much faster than I thought it would be. The delivery guy was great. He brought the table and top into the kitchen and unboxed it with us to make sure everything was in perfect condition.
The only issue was communication. We didn't know that it was going to be delivered until that morning. Luckily one of us was going to be home that day.
The Mercantila person I talked to when ordering was very friendly and even beat the sale price on another website. Plus I got the white-glove delivery, $25 rebate coupon and 1 year warranty that the other site didn't offer. I will do business again.

Created a bake center, but also store larger appliances that are too tall for the regular kitchen cabinets, ie the slicer. There is nothing about it I don't like. It is roomy, flexible top allows room savings. Works great as a breakfast bar as well.

Pros:
- Beautiful, the pictures don't do it justice.
- Larger than expected. Great for our large kitchen/dining area.
- Large, useful work area, about 3' X 5'.
- Good quality tropical wood. Looks like rubber wood.
- Great design. Convenient large storage areas, small display areas, wide and deep drawer.
- Everything fits well out of the box, no drilling needed.
- Should last a long time with some modifications (see below).
- Shipped in two packages; the assembled top and the assembled bottom unit. Homeowner assembly minimal compared to islands from other dealers.
- Supplied legs are great. Easy to replace with wheels if you desire to.
Cons:
- Made in Thailand, not "New England" as the computer display implies. All screws and the barrel bolts are extremely poor quality. These should be replaced for longevity of the unit. I replaced useless supplied barrel bolts with quality spring loaded barrel bolts. Or, screw down top as another reviewer suggested.
- Many stripped screws as shipped. When you replace screws (highly recommended), pick one size thicker.
- A lot of hidden masonite or MDF. Screw into this with gentle caution, reinforce with glue where appropriate.
- Poor drawer construction. Homeowner should reinforce the drawer back corners and base with glue and "L" brackets.
- Top is very heavy. Help needed to place on base.
- Supplied white glue is poor quality. Use Titebond, epoxy, or equivalent.
Assembly, upgrading hardware, and reinforcing unit construction took me under 2 hours. We're very happy with this island. Don't expect $4,000 custom construction, but it's a good deal for the price and a very attractive addition to your home.

The good:
- Beautiful piece of furniture.
- Large size perfect for our big kitchen.
- Good quality tropical wood. Looks like rubber wood.
- Easy assembly (see below for problems in this)
The bad:
- Poor quality hardware. Screws are very soft so it's easy to wreck the Philips slot. I replaced them with better quality screws. The barrel bolts are useless to secure the top. I replaced them with brass spring loaded barrel bolts.
- Poor quality white glue came in box. I used Titebond wood glue.
- Drawer sides and bottom were not glued. Corners are held with screws rather than better quality mortise and tenon construction. I took drawers apart and glued everything. I doubt that original construction would hold up to much use.
- Top is VERY heavy. You'll need strong help to place it on the island.
- Finish looks like lacquer rather than hard varnish. If so, it's not too bad because lacquer is easy to sand down a bit and cover with varnish later on.
Delivery was prompt, but I was totally in the dark about when it would arrive until a phone call that it had arrived in San Diego. The two boxes were on a pallet and were well protected.

the only thing i found bothersome was the screws that we were given to attach the door knobs with. It was not an easy task to attach those to the drawer and the doors. We ended up having to purchase different screws, which then made the assembly go much smoother
